Frequently Asked Questions
What is Climate Connect Aotearoa?
Climate Connect Aotearoa is a climate innovation hub. It facilitates the transition to a climate-resilient and low carbon Tāmaki Makaurau and Aotearoa New Zealand.
Established by Tātaki Auckland Unlimited on behalf of Auckland Council, it brings together different organisations to facilitate the solutions needed to reduce emissions in line with global agreements to ensure that Aotearoa New Zealand can adapt and thrive in the face of climate change.
Where did an idea to establish Climate Connect Aotearoa come from?
An idea of a climate innovation hub emerged during the development of Te Tāruke-ā-Tāwhiri: Auckland's Climate Plan (Te Tāruke-ā-Tāwhiri).
Developed by Auckland Council in partnership with mana whenua, businesses, academia, local and central government agencies, and communities, Te Tāruke-ā-Tāwhiri outlines priorities and action areas that should allow Tāmaki Makaurau reach its environmental goals:
- To reduce Auckland’s greenhouse gas emissions by 50 per cent by 2030 and achieve net zero emissions by 2050
- To adapt to the impacts of climate change by ensuring Auckland plans for the changes faced under the current emissions pathway.
To deliver against these goals, Te Tāruke-ā-Tāwhiri has eight priorities for action. The fourth priority for action focuses on the economy and includes the creation of “a climate innovation hub that enables Aucklanders to introduce climate compatible solutions to the market.”
Tātaki Auckland Unlimited, Auckland’s economic and cultural agency, holds a mandate to develop such a hub on behalf of Auckland Council, with funding committed through Auckland’s Long-Term Plan.
