Nikau Hindin is a barkcloth maker who works with aute (paper mulberry, Broussonetia papyrifera) and earth pigments. She has spent the past decade reinvigorating the practice of aute in Aotearoa – including teaching this knowledge to a new generation of makers. Her practice is devoted to the life cycle of the paper mulberry plant, from its growing and harvesting, to processing the inner bark and creating a fine cloth. Working intimately with plants and tools that come from the natural environment, Hindin aligns her practices with the maramataka. Her work has been recognised internationally and is currently some of the most widely exhibited examples of earth pigment exploration by a contemporary Māori artist.
